Freon 134a (HFC-134a) is a non-ozone depleting, hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant. It was originally designed as a replacement refrigerant for R-12, an ozone depleting, chlorofluorocarbon (CFC). Freon 134a is currently the global automotive, original equipment standard refrigerant used in mobile air conditioning systems. It can also be used to retrofit existing R-12 mobile air conditioning systems.
